The After Dinner Opera Company is celebrating its 48th anniversary

Whereas:
The company, founded in 1949 by Richard Flusser - still its director - presents chamber operas written, composed and sung by american artists. It tours the United States, Canada and Europe performing in 18th century opera houses, school gymnasiums and other venues, and presents operas based on stories by authors including Gertrude Stein, O.Henry, Langston Hughes, James Thurber and Edward Gorey, with scores by such distinguished composers as Seymour Barab, Otto Luening, Alec Wilder, Ned Rorem, and Virgil Thomson innovative productions include Bizet's Carmen with english lyrics by Ring Lardner, set in 1920's New York City. Many free and low-cost performances enable seniors, school children and community audiences to experience the joys of opera; and

Whereas:
For 48 years the after dinner opera company has delighted music lovers of all ages with unique programs that showcase talented american artists, build new audiences for the arts, and give knowledgeable audiences a fresh perspective on opera,

Now therefore, I, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this important anniversary, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, December 3, 1997 in the City of New York as

"After Dinner Opera Company Day"
